Balancing Job Searching & Work Portfolio

If you’re like me at the moment, either fresh out of a coding bootcamp or out of college with a degree then I know you’re dealing with searching for a new job and making sure your portfolio of all your projects and neat apps are up to par. Your probably applying to a whole bunch of jobs or searching through different sites for positions you know you can handle or at least meet the requirements for, at the same time need to work on a project to make your Github green as possible (you guys know what i’m talking about lol). Then to add into that your probably trying to make outreaches and networking as much as possible so you can connect with like minded people or to help yourself get some insight on a company you’d be interested to work for, so its a lot on your plate but I’ll tell you my way of dividing my time so you wont scramble yourself up.

Me in the beginning of my job search journey 😅

Now to start off the best thing that helped me really manage everything up is to simply manage your time. I know it sounds simple just saying it but just think about what to prioritize. For example with me I prioritize applying for jobs for a good amount of time and before the end of my productive day I work on whatever project I created or go back to an old one and make a few commits to keep my profile green as possible. In between of doing those two I always squeeze in a lil time for other things like making outreaches towards different people or taking time out to write blogs like this one.

For what I’m able to squeeze in between what I prioritize I separate it by different days. So let’s say Mondays and Wednesdays I take those days to make outreaches in between of me applying for jobs and working on projects. Tuesdays and Thursdays I take the time to either learn new things like a new language, or go over some things I already know but to keep my mind fresh for Tech interviews and just to make sure I’m up to par with what I need to know. Friday’s I still do what I prioritize and write blogs like this one and end my day short to let my mind relax (Always good to take a breather). The weekends I always say its for you to spend it how you want, whether you want to continue being productive or take the time out to relax and chill with some family & friends.

It’s not always easy planning out your days when your looking for a job and trying to keep yourself hire-able at the same time but we try our best right 🤷🏾‍♂️. So keep being productive, work the hell out of that project you got and I wish you guys luck on getting a job soon.
